I agree with this completely. Here's my one beef: "the bible is fiction" and "life is not the x-files" are both complete sentences, so they should be joined by a semi-colon, not a common. Correct grammar lends more credence to your opinions.

So, if you follow the bible do you stone disobedient children to death?

There are plenty of things in the bible that are cast aside, it seems only the more desirable rules are followed. Others (such as slaughtering homosexuals or selling your daughter into slavery) are never spoken of or acknowledged.

Homosexuality and slavery are both covered in the bible actually. With the second example you provide you should read a little bit more. This is a prophetic message to the people of the town of Nineveh warning them that if they dont change punishment will be brought upon the because God does not leave the guilty unpunished. These people had their warnings just the same as Sodam and Gomorra and with the many times Jerusalem was taken. If your going to use something as an example make sure it is relevant to modern times. And also the verse for the first example is in Deuteronomy.

I spent 22 years as a non-Christian before becoming one, so I have seen both sides. Blanket statements are pretty bogus. Regardless of belief, race, or gender, people are still imperfect people and there will always be members of a group who give everyone else a bad name. I hope you can meet some Christians who give you positive experiences
